Darrell Issa relentless in his Fast and Furious probe

Fast and Furious Investigation Heats Up

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee’s investigation into the gun-sting operation called Fast and Furious seems to have been going on forever. Actually it has just been 18 months since committee Chairman Darrell Issa began to dog the Justice Department about its links to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives operation. Issa now has steered the House into a contempt of Congress vote and he isn’t done yet.

There is no outstanding evidence that the California Republican representative is finding particular satisfaction in holding the U.S. attorney general, Eric Holder, in contempt. To the contrary, Issa can seem almost apologetic when he discusses the ins and outs of the probe. For example, he was asked if, as some of his colleagues have suggested, he has any evidence that the White House was involved in any alleged cover-up by the Justice Department.

“No, we don’t,” he said frankly. “What we are seeking are documents that we know exist… that are in fact about (U.S. Border Patrol agent) Brian Terry’s murder, who knew, and why people were lying about it, and get to the truth. That’s all we want.” This reasonableness about the scope of the House inquiry is appealing to many Americans. It tends to increase suspicion that something of significance is being hidden by Holder and possibly the White House.

Issa also was asked why he is disdainful of President Obama’s exercise of executive privilege in the case when he wasn’t similarly upset when President George W. Bush did the same during a Democratic investigation. He responded that President Obama has already said he and Holder didn’t discuss Fast and Furious, so why protect the requested documents? Besides, Issa added, there is evidence of criminality here, and that always needs to come out.

The self-made millionaire was a tenacious businessman, staying with business projects till they finally bore fruit. He is showing the same characteristics as a committee chairman. Regardless of how the Fast and Furious investigation pans out, it is now going to stay in the national conversation through the end of 2012—along with the name of Darrell Issa.
